Catchin’ Up

This past week/weekend was another good one, and when you have a good weekend, it makes the week ahead just a little bit better. Not that I have anything extremely stressful on my plate right now, but still…The soccer game yesterday was so fun (although extremely hot) and kind of nostalgic to be honest. I definitely need to join an intramural team when I’m back from Australia. My friend actually ended up being really sick throughout the game (we might have pulled over once on the way home…) and it turns out she has the flu. We assumed it was just an extreme case of a hangover or something but nope nope. I felt soo so bad you guys.

I ended Sunday watching the sunset with my parents, where we were able to see perfect outlines of both San Clemente AND Catalina it was so friggin clear. If you live in SD, you know how rare that is. Love me some santa ana weather. I later watched Mad Max for the first time before bed (don’t know why) and I don’t recommend it. Not that it was super bad or anything but just a very very weird movie…ANYWHO, this week will be spent making sure I didn’t catch anything and staying hydrated AF. Wish me luck!

Things to look forward to this week:

I’m grabbing coffee with a girl from Brisbane (my first stop in Australia) on Friday who’s going to give me a few pointers/recommendations which I’m excited about. Apparently her parents live right outside the city! Tomorrow my parents leave for a month in Antarctica, leaving me in charge of the house and some business-related tasks I’ll be doing for my dadI’m going to make it a point this week to head to the North Park Farmer’s Market on Thursday to pick up some goods and maybe grab drinks and tacos at Lucha Libre with a friend. Their entire theme/aesthetic is hilarious, plus they serve their nachos inside a mini boxing ring so that’s an entire argument to go right there.

Weekend/Travel Plans | UPDATE

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

This weekend involved lots and lots of rain, coffee, football, a power outage, and my good friend Tito (if you know, you know…).Of course it went by waay too fast and I don’t want the rain to leave! If you don’t already know, it never rains over here in San Diego so it’s pretty exciting.

Weekend Update: Besides getting two cavities filled on Thursday, the rest of the weekend only went up from there. Friday was spent soaking up the rainy weather and doing a whole lot of nothing. Went through some old photos I hadn’t seen since I don’t even know when, and found some gems. Those awkward phases are a very real thing. Saturday I went for a looong walk along the cliffs (where a guy pulled over to give me his card for something about trying some items from his clothing line he owns so that was interesting…) My mom and I did a little bit of shopping and then later that night I went to my friend’s house for a little party where I learned you could make a drinking game from a pizza box. Learning new + important things everyday, guys…The next day I met up with the same group and ate some brunch (that the guys slaved over making all morning might I add haha) until around 2-ish. The rest of the day was spent at home watching football and waiting out a power outage.

Future Travels/Life Update:  My sister is officially coming with me to Australia!! She’ll be meeting me in Sydney, so I’ll be doing Brisbane solo which I’m really excited about. My plan is to go to Brisbane > Sydney > Melbourne > New Zealand. Reaching out today to everyone I know via mutual friends who are in a few of these places and to do some research about WWOOFing in the South Island of New Zealand. Have any of you done it/know of anyone?? Regarding February, it’s going to consist of a weekend trip to Mammoth for my friends birthday, CRSSD Festival in Downtown SD, and going to the USA vs. Serbia soccer game (low key soooo excited about this).

There’s also been talk about doing Coachella again and going on a girls trip to Kauai with some friends in May. I did a girls trip senior year of high school after graduation and it was hands down one of the most fun trips I’ve ever been on.. The ball is starting to get rolling on things coming up and I cannot waaaiiittt!

Kauai Food Diary

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset
Is this not the sexiest thing you’ve ever seen?

As the obsessive foodie I am, I always get curious about what people eat on a daily basis especially if they’re vacationing, traveling, etc. etc. Sooo I thought it’d be fun to share examples of what a normal day of eating looked like for me while I was in Kauai for a month, especially since I would constantly have the freshest produce at my fingertips. They don’t call it the Garden Island for no reason ya know…

Whenever I’m in hot weather/wearing bikinis all day/doing lots of physical activity constantly, my body naturally gravitates toward fresh fruits/veggies and smaller portions in general,  rather than super hearty large meals throughout the day. That’s just what works best for me, personally. I don’t get bloated/feel heavy throughout the day when I work with smaller portions. And most importantly, I don’t get hangry, which is usually one of my biggest downfalls. Just ask any of my family members 🙂 🙂

Biggest tips for eating well on vacation:

– Limited to no alcohol. (Seriously makes the biggest difference.)

– Portion control.

– Whole, unprocessed foods.

Breakfast is usually really light, sometimes I’d skip it because my 2 cups of coffee (with coconut oil/cashew milk) would fill me up with all those good fats. Since I’d workout around 9ish everyday I didn’t want a full belly of food before I jumped around and what not. Anyways, I always had at least two cups of coffee with a tablespoon of coconut oil + some cashew milk + cinnamon + Naikela botanical’s adaptogen powder. That combo gives me the best energy and actually keeps me pretty satisfied until around 11 or so. If I wasn’t working out though then normally it would be some fruit, specifically half a papaya or an apple banana with a spoonful of almond butter. Nature’s candy I swear. OR we’d grab acai bowls up the street. And I’d also sip on a tiny cup of kombucha for the probiotics and to get things moving if ya know what I mean…

Lunch would be right before we would head to the beach so I would just dip some turkey slices in hummus with some slices of avocado and then I’m good to go. Those are basically my three favorite foods by the way, so it’s super satisfying for me. If not that, or if I’m more thirsty/need something cold, then I’d go ahead and make a quick smoothie. Super easy and sooo so good.

Dinner was always salad (with cucumber, goat cheese, tomato, radish, onion, carrots, etc.) + some form of meat+ sometimes a side of either potatoes or another side veggie. My cousins would bake dessert every night of some sort, so I would have a bite or two of whatever they made. I’ve learned that depriving yourself only makes things worse so a little sugar is A-ok.

When we got back from the beach every day I’d have a snack around 3-4ish to hold me over before dinner and chill. It usually always consisted of something with hummus. I love hummus…Then around 5:30 we’d make drinks and watch the sunset, then eat dinner!

Hey guys…

Internet Things

Island Inspo: Every “inspiration” post by DesignLoveFest is so. goooood. And in honor of me heading home from Kauai on Friday I thought it was fitting.

Shop: Thank you Instagram sponsored posts for bringing me to the cutest online clothing shop. I’ll take these overalls, this coat, this dress and these heels plz.

Food: Possibly the new quinoa that’ll be sweeping the health nuts/foodies of the web?

Fitness: It’s all about Kayla Itsines these days and other Instagram fitness gurus, but I’ve been following this girl for a while now and really want to try her plan. I like how she’s veered more toward flexibility as being key…along with plyometrics/getting toned.

Travel: Ummm I’ll gladly book a $69 flight to Europe please and thank you.

Post-holiday: If you’re still in recovery from the excessive amount of holiday parties you went to, you should check out these tips (which include some of my favs: colloidal silver + adaptogens!). These guys know whats up.

Making: I don’t normally eat sandwiches, but this roasted carrot/sunflower seed spread sandwich needs to get in my stomach right now.

So at last it’s just me in this big ol’ house here in Kauai. The holiday’s are over and everyone has left to head back to the real world. The last of my family leaves today, except my grandparents, they’re staying until the 16th (me, the 13th). One of my best friends comes in on the 8th and I’m so excited!! Today I’m getting my nails done, grocery shopping for this curry I’m gonna make tonight, walk, and then watch the sunset at Shipwrecks beach. ❤

Mostly what this trip has consisted of:

– Cortado Coffee trips

– Gym

– Beach x 1000

– Family dinners

– Kauai Juice Co…every day.

-Watching daily sunsets + sunrises like it’s our job

These past 2 weeks were amazing and also pretty exhausting, but in a good way. I love family time over here but I’m one of those people that gets so burnt out when I’m constantly having to make small talk every night at the dinner table and having to play catch up with all of the cousins/uncles/aunts. It’ll be nice to have some days and nights alone to have time to cook for myself, watch my shows, start to truly plan my Australia trip, and read a book on the beach with no interruptions like the good ol’ introvert I am likes to do heheh. Processed with VSCO with c1 presetProcessed with VSCO with c1 presetimg_8012Processed with VSCO with c1 presetimg_8112Processed with VSCO with c1 presetProcessed with VSCO with c1 presetSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCimg_8179SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCProcessed with VSCO with c1 presetimg_8096

Wellness Brands I’d Like to Get to Know in 2017

From health trends about mushroom powders to organic tampons, there are a ton of brands i’d like to get to know in 2017. I think the health + wellness movement won’t be slowing down anytime soon. In fact I believe it’s just starting to gain tons of momentum because of the “cool” factor fiiiinally catching on. Helloo sober is the new cool trend I keep seeing pop up! It’s really exciting especially since I feel like more opportunities job-wise, might be popping up as well. Integrating wellness into hospitality is my dream, for those who know me haha. What better way to introduce strangers from around the world to the wellness scene than to immerse them in every aspect of it during their stay/experience? I HAVE BIG IDEAS, GUYS.

Anyways, these are the brands I can’t wait to learn more about + try for myself in the coming year!

P.S. Yes, I know that some have been on the market for a little while, but I am hoping they get more recognition in the coming year. ❤

Drunk Elephant Skincare: Based out of L.A. since 2012, this line of skincare products is different from most in that the creator (Tiffany Masterson) put a huge emphasis on the actual effectiveness of the natural ingredients that go into them. You know how some “natural” skin products don’t seem to do much?  She designed them so they are fragrance free (fragrance doesn’t help the skin whatsoever), and only use ingredients that have truly been shown via research as being effective on the skin. No B.S. basically.

Sakara Eat Clean Eat WHole Logo

Sakara Life: Pretty popular already but there are a few products that Sakara offers that i’ve been seeing pop up around the web that I can’t wait to get my hands on. Aka: Watermelon Beef Jerky, Watermelon Seed Butter, and their CBD Chocolates! This company is originally a food-delivery service offering gluten-free and plant based meals. They preach the clean eating lifestyle and “you are what you eat” mantra. I love how unique some of their products are and how they are more outside the box than most other similar brands.

Primal Kitchen: High quality, nutrient dense, real foods with clean ingredients you can trust. The founder, an ex elite endurance athlete, created this brand to reintroduce people to real food and to think of food for our longevity. He wants to show you that flavor doesn’t have to be sacrificed for health. Ummm these collagen-infused chocolate hazelnut bars.

Herbivore Botanicals: Based out of Seattle, Herbivore Botanicals is a cosmetics/skincare brand that uses only active/highly concentrated and raw ingredients, with no fillers, tested by humans on humans. What you won’t find in their products is synthetic ingredients, parabens, sodium laurel sulfate, phthalates, chemicals, fillers, animal testing, mineral oils, and  petroleum. Also, how pretty is their packaging?

Curious Elixirs: On trend with the “sober is the new cool” theme I’ve been seeing a lot of lately, Curious Elixirs was created by a New York bartender who was able to blend the expertise of world-class bartenders, herbalists, and food scientists in order to produce this booze-free drink. Their hashtag is really cute too: #shakennotslurred.

“Our craft cocktails combine ONLY organic juices, spices, herbs, roots, barks, and botanicals. Brewed without booze for maximum flavor. Lightly carbonated to make your mouth dance.”

Fatworks Food: This brand is trying to get people on the fat bandwagon again by creating products with good fats for cooking and producing content that informs the people of why it’s healthy and why we used to be much much healthier back in the day when we were incorporating these good fats into our daily diets. AMEN.

The Dirt: Paleo personal are that uses essential oils and almost completely unprocessed ingredients. Soy Free, Corn Free, Gluten Free, Grain Free, Cruelty Free and Natural.

Fig + Moss: This small-batch apothecary skin-care product line is one of my favorites. “Our products are designed to retain as much of the beneficial plant material as possible, using the highest quality in plant oils and butters, and essential oils. None of our products contain preservatives, artificial colorants, artificial fragrances or any other chemicals or fillers, therefore each one is highly concentrated in nourishing ingredients, and just a little will go a long way.”

Wellness: Good vs. Bad Fats

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The main thing you need to get through your head if you are still contemplating eating fats:

NOT ALL FATS ARE CREATED EQUAL! Fats are vital for both your physical and mental health. Now learn up!:

Happy Monday! Hope everyone is either on break or almost at their break for the holidays. I’m currently sipping my coffee looking out at the rainy weather outside our place in Kauai. It’s funny, I used to get depressed whenever it used to rain during Christmas time when we’ve been here in the past, but now I fully embrace it and actually love it! It’s so nice to see the island become so green, and you can smell the dirt (sounds gross but you know what I mean) and plants, etc. From San Diego where it never really rains, it’s always a nice change. Plus I can give my skin a break from the sun and write some posts for you guys! These past few days involved getting lots of Kauai Juice, going on a sunset cruise, seeing old friends, shopping, and celebrating my dad’s birthday! So far so good this trip. Can’t wait until the entire fam is all here ❤

Today my brother gets here all the way from NY!!! Can’t wait to see him. I’m probably going to shop for his Christmas gift at some point (p.s. why are brothers always so hard to shop for??), then head into Hanapepe to shop at Blu-Umi and find some goodies. Today is leg day which I feel like I should point out because I always dreaddd BBG leg days and it’s half of what I think about all day until I do it and it’s over haha. I die. But in a good way!

A few (a lot..) snapshots from the past few days:

Christmas Gifting | 5

Happy Saturday, peeps! Today I’m going to a little local holiday block party with some friends, then maybe seeing a movie with another friend tonight!  I’m finally over this stupid cold so I also want to try to get in a more intense workout today if possible. I wanted to christmas shop today but I feel like that’s going to unfortunately be pushed to tomorrow now. I hope you guys like #5 of the gift guides! Kind of an odd mix with this one today but that’s always more fun, right?:

I saw the makeup brush applicator when I was watching a makeup video on YouTube and not only does it work really well, but it seems like such a nice face massaging tool haha. The iphone projector and handheld vacuum are kinda for the guys out there (or girls!). My dad is obsessed with vacuuming so I might be getting that for him and his giant truck. A little dainty wave ring can be appreciated by most girls, especially those who love the ocean.

I came across these shower speakers and thought it was genius because I’m always playing music from my laptop or phone when I take a shower but can’t hear it very well. So clever. I have actually been using the vanity planet facial brush since junior year of college and I love it. Way cheaper (so many discount codes online) than clarasonic but just as good, in my opinion. The wooden aromatherapy diffuser would be so nice for winter months for humidifying the air plus it supports the immune system. Just turn it on before bed and you’re gold. Might be getting this for myself…

Last but not least, the Amazfit Moonbeam tracks calories, sleep and activity throughout the day, plus it vibrates when you have an incoming call. It’s so much prettier, is hypoallergenic, has wireless charging, and is water-resistant too. Compared to other trackers this is one I’d actually want  to wear.

Design Inspo

Today’s inspo is coming all the way from Happy Valley, Hong Kong. This is a renovated 3 bedroom apartment inside of an old residential building. I’m obsessed with how they designed the rooms to be either really open and have the ability to seamlessly blend with the adjacent room, or if you need privacy you can make them into their own little nooks. And is this color palette not the cutest thing you’ve ever seen?

The mixture of colors with the wallpaper in the living room + the pink couch + black framed sliding doors + the bubbly light fixtures, all somehow blend really well and give the apartment a personality of its own. I think the teal color behind that mirror is so bold and cool, I’m obsessed. Really makes me want to get my own place.
